When the fuel pump on those goes, it goes and does not recover, I had said on my 2.0DTI. The leak off pipes can let in air, causing cavitation and that is a common fault. You would only get a very small amount of diesel coming from the pipes when you crank it because the pump is only designed to run about 0.25ltr/min which is not going to be flowing out. If you have more trouble, try the leak off pipes. I don't recall if there is a second backing pump on your's but have a check and make sure that works. Only a Bosch pump specialist would be able to diagnose a fault with the pump ECU, Vx can't and a dodgy road side mechanic certainly could not. It was probably refitting and bleeding the system, that got it started after him.
